Structure of the New Edition

In October 2023, the Special Interest Group (SIG) on AI Language Services launched a new edition exploring the integration of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) with Large Language Models (LLMs). This initiative underscores the need to adapt to technological advances in translation and localization while promoting collaboration among industry stakeholders. The launch kicked off with an introduction to "A Common Machine Translation Post-Editing Protocol," a handbook summarizing previous insights and setting the stage for future discussions.

The new edition comprises eight monthly calls from October 2023 to May 2024, each focusing on specific aspects of AI in translation. Its main goal is to address key questions about the intersection of AI technologies and traditional translation methods. Key stakeholders—including Language Service Providers (LSPs), buyers, academic institutions, and post-editors—all play crucial roles in shaping translation's future.

Fundamental Concepts

The initial focus is on understanding the fundamental concepts underlying these technologies. Neural Machine Translation—a technology using neural networks to enhance translation accuracy and fluency—forms the backbone of modern translation practices. Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, mark a significant advance, using vast datasets to produce contextually appropriate and grammatically correct translations.

The Role of Generative AI

Generative AI refers to systems that can create new content in various forms, such as text, audio, and images. The SIG highlights that while these technologies can improve translation processes, they also require careful consideration of ethical issues. These include potential bias, data privacy concerns, and the need for cultural sensitivity.

Setting the Stage for Future Discussions

The inaugural call lays the groundwork for subsequent discussions, highlighting the significance of user experience and the necessity for continuous dialogue among stakeholders. Through establishing a forum for exchanging experiences and insights, the SIG strives to develop a unified understanding of how to effectively incorporate AI into translation processes.
