The skills and competencies of the post-editors need to be mapped in order to define MTPE training guidelines.

Given the translation technology expansion in the translation industry, the conventional translation skills need to be upgraded, taking into consideration the following factors:

• the technical advances
• the temporal restrictions
• the higher volumes
• the higher expertise needed for a better use of CAT tools and MT engines.

Even if based on the basic skills and competencies of the translator, the role of the post-editor cannot coincide with the role of the translator, the reviewer or the editor, as the mental process and the cognitive load of the task involved are different, just like the starting point, the translation journey and the ending point are completely different.

Upskilling and reskilling are the keywords of this transitional translation era and they are essential to the translation industry’s growth and to the evolution of the linguist from translator to translation expert who applies decision-making and problem-solving skills inn the translation process during the post-editing of the MT output.
